Conservatory Design & Build - Part 3 - The Building Structure

The long-awaited doors and windows duly arrived, and on the scheduled date too, so it was time to assemble and erect the building.

The delivery coincided with a short spell of fine weather, with no rain forecast for at least three days, so the intention was to complete the basic build and make the conservatory weathertight within this timescale.

The photo diary continues from Part 2 ...

the windows and door on the north face were pre-assembled
and in position within a few hours after delivery !

on the western aspect, the cill was cut away locally to accept an insert
made from steel hollow section, to transfer the corner post loads
directly down to the concrete ring beam

further inserts were provided below all the reinforced joining
pieces at the connections between each window / door frame

fast-forward a day, and all the frames are fixed, plus the roof
perimeter beams in position, and with the load bearing roof bars
fitted, which span between the ridge & eaves.  These bolted roof
bars make the whole building very rigid, and ready for glazing

and outside ...

the French doors ...

we'd already bought two ceiling fan / light units, and I made up these
fixing plates from laser-cut steel discs I picked up on eBay

ceiling fan adapters pre-assembled to the aluminium roof
bars using six stainless self-tappers through the flange,
and with the power cable pre-routed behind the PVC trim

the roof fitted, photo taken from our IP security camera

one of the ceiling fans - these were fitted as soon as the roof
was on so we had lights inside to continue working after dark

the guttering tied into the existing downpipe

End of Part 3.

  1. Looks like good progress. Do the patio doors open inwards though? If so seems like a strange choice as the norm is for outward opening doors...?

    1. Hi. We need access down between the building and the summerhouse opposite, and it's not a good idea to have doors opening outwards onto a corridor.

It's also often very windy here, another reason for having the doors opening inwards.

The beauty of designing things yourself is you can meke your own norms ...
